Optimization vs. monitoring — they're different jobs
Optimization is the work you do on your pages so an LLM can cite you: clean answers near the top, schema, entity clarity, skimmable structure. That's the AEO/GEO side — the GEO guide covers it in detail.
Rank tracking is the feedback loop. It watches real prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews and tells you, prompt by prompt, whether your brand appears and which URLs get cited. Without it, you're shipping AEO changes blind.
The right sequence is audit → optimize → track. Skip the audit and you monitor invisibility. Skip the tracking and you can't tell which changes worked.
What an AI rank tracker actually measures
- Share of voice. How often your brand shows up across a set of tracked prompts, vs. competitors.
- Source attribution. Which exact URLs the LLM cited — not just whether it named your brand.
- Prompt history. How answers to the same prompt drift week over week as models retrain.
- Competitive gap. Prompts where competitors get cited and you don't — your prioritized to-do list.
- Model coverage. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews — coverage varies per tool.

Visit Website VerdictHow to set up rank tracking without wasting a month
- Baseline your visibility. Run an AEO/GEO audit first — see the AI search optimization tools guide. Tracking a broken foundation just monitors the breakage.
- Pick 30–60 prompts that matter. Mix branded ("what is [brand]"), category ("best X for Y"), and job-to-be-done prompts. Skip prompts no one actually asks.
- Add 3–5 competitors. Share-of-voice only means something in context.
- Instrument citation URLs. When the LLM cites you, note which page — that's the page that earned the answer, and it deserves more of your optimization time.
- Review weekly, not daily. LLM answers drift; a weekly cadence catches signal without chasing noise.
Where to start
If you haven't audited yet, do that first — a Website Verdict run covers search, AEO, GEO, and agent readiness in one pass. Then pick a tracker that matches your team size: Otterly for solo operators, Peec AI or AthenaHQ for growth teams, Profound for enterprise brand programs.
For the on-page work that makes tracking numbers move, read the GEO guide and the AI search optimization tools guide.
