AEO vs SEO

AEO vs SEO: how they differ in 2026

AEO vs SEO explained — how Answer Engine Optimization wins citations inside ChatGPT and Perplexity, while traditional SEO still owns Google's blue links.

Two disciplines, one buyer journey

SEO optimizes for Google's blue links. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — optimizes for the synthesized answers rendered by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Buyers now bounce between both surfaces in the same session, so ignoring either loses revenue.

AEO is often paired with GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). GEO is the structural work that makes a page LLM-friendly; AEO is the outcome — being the cited answer. In practice most teams use the terms interchangeably.

Where AEO extends SEO

Traditional SEO fundamentals still matter: fast pages, clean information architecture, honest schema, and topical authority. AEO layers three additional habits on top:

  • Answer-first passages. Lead with a 40–80 word direct answer that a model can quote verbatim.
  • Comparison tables and lists. LLMs preferentially lift structured chunks over prose walls.
  • Primary-source citations. Link out to original data — models score sources that cite sources.

Do you replace SEO with AEO?

No. Run them in parallel. SEO still converts most transactional queries in 2026; AEO captures the top-of-funnel research that's migrating to LLMs. A page tuned for AEO usually ranks better in Google too, because the same structure (clear answers, schema, citations) rewards both crawlers.
